For nearly 3,000 years, people and goods have been transported across the world's largest delta, the Bengal, on extraordinary sailboats never seen or built elsewhere in the world. Over a period of 30 years, from the mid-1970s on, most of these boats have disappeared!
An NGO, Friendship co-founded by a French man Yves Marre in 2002, took the initiative to put together an inventory cataloging and classifying the different models, and to have identical replicas built by the old shipwrights using traditional techniques and materials.

Most of these photos I took during my travels through Bangladesh from 1975 to 1982. Very few photos of these extraordinary boats exist.
More on these boats and the models undfer the section Exhibitions: "The Boats from Bangladesh"
